How to reduce yellow tones in blonde hair

2 min read

Yellow or warm tones in blonde hair are common after lightening and between salon visits. Violet or silver pigments can visually neutralise them, but choose the right intensity and consider hair condition.

Why does blonde hair turn yellow?

Lightening exposes warm natural pigments. A cool tone may weaken over time due to washing, heat, environmental factors and normal pigment washout. Tone-maintaining products are therefore used periodically, rather than as everyone's everyday shampoo.

Purple shampoo or toning mask?

Purple or silver shampoo is convenient for brief toning while washing. A toning mask often has more contact time and provides care as well. Porous and very light hair may absorb pigment faster, so start with a shorter time within the manufacturer's instructions.

Find a variety of neutralising products in the category ANTI-YELLOW.

For ESTEL users, we have a dedicated ESTEL Prima Blonde range for blonde and lightened hair.

How to avoid over-toning

  • Use a shorter processing time on the first application and assess the result.

  • Watch very porous ends more closely: they may absorb pigment faster.

  • Avoid using several strongly toning products together without a need.

  • Moisturise after toning if the hair feels dry.

Blonde care is about more than colour

Lightened hair is often drier or more porous, so an anti-yellow product alone is not enough. Include a gentle shampoo, conditioner or mask, and leave-in care if needed. This helps maintain a cooler shade along with smoother hair and easier detangling.

Frequently asked questions

How often should I use purple shampoo?

Frequency depends on the product's pigmentation, your hair colour and porosity. Follow the specific manufacturer's instructions and assess the result after each use.

Does an anti-yellow product lighten hair?

No. It does not change lightness like a lightening service. Violet pigment only visually neutralises some yellow tones.

What if my hair has become too purple?

The tone usually washes out gradually. Next time, reduce processing time or frequency. If the result is very uneven, consulting a hairdresser is safer.

Which products should I choose to reduce yellow tones?

Choose according to hair colour, desired toning intensity and whether you need cleansing or more intensive care for the lengths:

A strand test is recommended before first use of a highly pigmented product: very porous hair may tone unevenly.
